The Royal Amazon is located on a small clear water tributary of the Amazon perfectly suited for peacock bass. It is one of the few regions anywhere in the Amazon under permanent protection by IBAMA, the Brazilian Environmental Institute for the Protection of the Amazon and the governor of the state of Roraima. This "Ecotourism Reserve" status has insured that the river and the forest that surrounds it will be protected for years to come. Sport fishing is allowed on a catch and release basis. This is one of the few drainages in the Amazon where commercial fishing is absolutely prohibited, and single barbless hooks are required.

Species and Seasons

Season: January - March
Primary Species: Peacock Bass
Other Species: Pirarucu, Paci

Accommodations and Amenities

The Royal Amazon Lodge is located on a quiet stretch of the Agua Boa River. At the lodge, clients are attended by a friendly Brazilian staff. The size of the lodge is small to afford anglers a great expanse of fishing water and to insure that the atmosphere at the lodge is a pleasant one. For those who have traveled on houseboats with 14-20 fishermen crammed into a small space, the attraction of the Royal Amazon is an obvious one. It is the small family atmosphere and sheer elegance of the lodge that have made the Royal Amazon a success.

About the houseboat option - there are two houseboats on the Agua Boa River: one upriver and one down river. This is a great option for clients interested in seeing a bit more of the river. During extreme low water, you may not be able to access the houseboats in a reasonable length of time. This is left to the discretion of the camp manager.

Other Activities

There is an extensive trail system (over 50 miles of trail) at the Royal Amazon Lodge. The trails wind through savannah, gallery and flood forest. They are well maintained and well marked so that guests can wander without worry of getting lost.

The birds and wildlife are absolutely spectacular if you take your time. During the prime hours, jacamars, parrots, macaws, parakeets, toucans, aracaris, antbirds, cotingas, flickers, manakins, woodpeckers and hummingbirds are among some of the birds you might expect to see. Tapir, nutria, agouti, peccary, bands of squirrel and howler monkeys and collared peccary are also a common sight on the trails of the Agua Boa.

Special Concerns

A passport is required. In the event of high water, the Royal Amazon Lodge will notify clients and give the option for a raincheck for openings in the season or the following year, or the option to fish a river with suitable water conditions. Please check with the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta for up to date recommendations on vaccinations and medicines needed for the Brazilian Amazon.
